Getting to Know: Amanda!
May 13, 2013
This week, we are getting to know Amanda! Amanda wears a few different hats around the clinic; she is a certified veterinary technician and is also our office manager. Amanda was a driving force behind Grand Avenue Veterinary Center achieving our AAHA accreditation. In her own words:
What make you decide to become a veterinary technician?
I decided to become a veterinary technician after I had seen an ad for veterinary technology at the Medical Institute of MN on television. I’ve always loved animals but I never thought about working with them until seeing that ad.
Where did you go to school/what year did you graduate?
I attended school at the Medical Institute of MN (now called Argosy University) and graduated in 2001.
How did you decide to go into office management?
Becoming an office manager was an opportunity I was offered after a number of years doing some small management tasks. I love the additional responsibilities and the “business” side of things.
Tell us about your pets.
I have a geriatric Siamese cross named Tool. My husband, Matt adopted him as a kitten and is named after the band Tool. He is super vocal and still fairly active even at 20. We also have a 10 year old lab named Sconnie. Dr. Brownlee fostered her for the humane society when she was a year old and pregnant. After the puppies were weaned, we adopted her. She has one personality flaw: she doesn’t like other dogs. Other than that, she is the best dog ever!
Tell us about your history with GAVC.
I am going into my 12th year at GAVC. As part of the veterinary technician program, students spend some time shadowing at clinics, then later do an internship. I shadowed here during my 2nd semester at tech school and when it came time to do my internship there was no doubt for me to try and gain an internship at GAVC. Lucky for me after my internship, I was hired on as a veterinary technician.
What is your favorite day of the week?
I love Sundays. They are typically a very mellow day for me. I love watching football in the fall and winter and I’m a huge Vikings fan, despite living in Wisconsin (I’m a transplant from St. Paul).
What is your favorite form of exercise?
Most of the exercise that I get these days is chasing around my 3 year old and 16 month old. If I had more time, I would love to fit in more yoga.
What sound do you love?
I love the sound of my kids laughing. It makes everything all right.
If you could learn anything, what would it be?
There are a few things I would like to learn. I would like to learn how to sew and knit. I’d also like to be able to speak a foreign language fluently.
What is the last movie you saw?
In the theater: This is kind of embarrassing…Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2. At home: Bridesmaids
