Getting to Know: Dr. Jen Seidl

August 26, 2013

This week we are getting to know Dr. Jen Seidl, one of our veterinarians! Jen is another employee who has worn different hats during her history with Grand Avenue Veterinary Center; we were very happy to see her return as a veterinarian after graduating from veterinary school!

What made you decide to become a veterinarian?

I wish I could say that I always knew I was going to be a veterinarian… that certainly would have been the simpler path.  It wasn’t until I had already graduated from college and was feeling unsatisfied in my first career that I came to the realization that veterinary medicine was the perfect fit for me.

Where did you go to school/what year did you graduate?

University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, 2010.

Do you have an area of special interest in veterinary medicine?

I have special interests in holistic medicine, nutrition, oncology, cardiology, soft tissue surgery, anesthesia, and geriatric medicine.

Tell us about your pets.

We have 2 giant breed dogs and they are the perfect fit for our family. Newman is our 6 year old Newfoundland. He is easy-going, extremely sweet, and loves to swim.  We are also starting to see a new playful side to Newman since adopting our newest addition the family, Rufus. Rufus is a 2 year old Saint Bernard. He is mischievous, goofy, and completely unaware of his body presence.

Tell us about your history with Grand Avenue Veterinary Center.

I was initially hired in 2003.  I worked as a veterinary assistant at Grand Avenue until 2009 when I left the practice to focus on my last year of veterinary school as well as motherhood – my daughter was born at the beginning of my 4th year of veterinary school.  After graduating veterinary school, I started at another practice yet all along wished I was back at Grand Avenue.  I gladly returned to Grand Avenue Veterinary Center in 2011 when a veterinarian position became available.

What is your favorite indoor or outdoor activity?

I love being at our cabin and all of the activities that go with it – fishing, swimming, going on nature walks, playing cards, sitting by the fire, listening to my playlist as I prepare dinner, etc.

What sound do you love?

Most things that I hear coming from my young children – their laughter, their amusing made-up songs, their ever-growing vocabulary.

When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you spend it?

Get outside and go for a run, read a segment of a book, or catch up on my recorded TV shows.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

I know this isn’t technically a “gift” but I would consider my husband and our children my greatest gift.

What are you reading now?

The Emperor of All Maladies – The Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee

What is the last movie you saw?

Probably a Veggie Tales movie with my kids
