Getting to Know Serena!

July 2, 2021

We’re taking this month to get you caught up on all of our new (and not-so-new) staff! This week we’re introducing Serena, one of our excellent Veterinary Assistants!

What made you decide to work in this field?

I have always known that I wanted to work with animals, so working in a veterinary setting seemed perfect to me. I am very passionate about the well being of dogs and cats and really enjoy connecting with pet owners.

Where did you go to school?

I go to school at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. I am currently majoring in Animal Science (pre-vet emphasis) and minoring in Wildlife Care and Handling.

Do you have an area of special interest in veterinary medicine?

My goal is to go to vet school and become a veterinarian. I am unsure if I want to specialize in something, but I know for certain that I want to work with dogs and cats.

Tell us about your pets.

I have two wonderful pets. I have an 11 year old black lab named Tuesday. She is very sweet and friendly. Tuesday loves going on four-wheeler rides and watching squirrels from our living room window. I also have a 5 year old brown tabby cat named Maple. Maple is very energetic and has a huge personality. Her favorite toy is a shoelace, which she brings to me whenever she wants to play.

Tell us about your history with Grand Avenue Veterinary Center.

I started at Grand Avenue Veterinary Center in January 2021. I am a vet assistant, and therefore have multiple different roles within the clinic. Some days I assist doctors with their appointments. Other days I work at the front desk answering phone calls and helping clients who come into the lobby. Overall, I am very grateful to be a part of the GAVC team and am excited to continue this
journey.

What is your favorite indoor or outdoor activity?

My favorite outdoor activity is hiking. I have visited many state parks in Minnesota and have also gone to the Black Hills in South Dakota many times.

If you could learn anything, what would it be?

If I could learn anything, I would learn how to speak and understand animals. Not only would it be awesome to speak with animals, but I think we could also learn a lot from them.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

The best gift I have ever received is a heated jacket. My heated jacket makes the 20 minute walk to class bearable during the Minnesota winter.

What is the last movie you saw?

I just saw The Quiet Place 2. This is definitely one of my favorite horror movies. Unlike most horror movies, this one has a well developed plot and great acting. I would highly recommend it!
